Russia detains US citizen on suspicion of spying

1 January

Russian security authorities have detained a US citizen in Moscow on suspicion of spying.

Russia's Federal Security Service said on Monday that Paul Whelan had been arrested on espionage charges. The organization gave no details of the alleged spying.

Russia has criticized US judicial authorities for arresting last July a Russian woman residing in Washington for spying. She allegedly infiltrated political groups in the United States and operated at the direction of the Russian government.

Relations between the United States and Russia have soured since Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and the country's firing at and seizure of Ukrainian naval ships last November have further worsened tensions.
