Saudi Arabia: Houthi missiles intercepted

Saudi Arabia says it has intercepted two missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The announcement comes as tension mounts between Iran and the United States, a Saudi ally.

The Saudi Arabian Embassy in the US tweeted on Monday that two "Iranian-made Houthi missiles" had been intercepted.

Al Arabiya TV, a Saudi-backed satellite broadcaster, said the missiles were fired on Monday morning, with one of them directed at the Muslim holy site of Mecca.

The Houthis have denied carrying out the attack. The group earlier claimed responsibility for drone strikes on a Saudi oil pipeline last week. Saudi Arabia suspects Iranian involvement in the pipeline attack.

A Saudi-led coalition is fighting the Iran-backed Houthis in a long-running civil war in Yemen.
