Seoul mayor found dead after going missing

10 July

South Korean police say the mayor of Seoul has been found dead.

Police say Mayor Park Won-soon did not appear in Seoul's city hall on Thursday, saying he was not feeling well. But it later became apparent that he had left his official residence in the morning.

Police say his daughter told police in the afternoon that she could not contact him as his mobile phone was switched off.

Police and firefighters began searching for Park and discovered his body in a wooded area shortly after midnight.

Police are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death, and say they have found nothing to indicate he had been involved in a crime.

South Korean media outlets report that a woman who once worked as Park's secretary had filed a sexual harassment claim against him. Police say they received the claim on Wednesday but refused to elaborate, saying the investigation was still underway.

Park worked as a human rights lawyer before winning the 2011 Seoul mayoral election. He had a reputation as a reformist. He was serving his third term as mayor.
