The unrest started after opposition candidate Prabowo Subianto rejected President Joko Widodo's victory, citing widespread cheating.

Prabowo's supporters have been gathering outside the government offices in the capital city of Jakarta to protest the results. The demonstrations turned violent on Tuesday night.

A police dormitory and a number of vehicles were set on fire. Authorities say nearly 260 people have been arrested so far.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in central Jakarta.

More than 30,000 police officers and soldiers are deploying to cordon off access to the government offices.

The election commission announced the official vote count on Tuesday, with President Joko Widodo winning 55 percent of the vote.

Prabowo took 44 percent. He said he plans to contest the election results in court. Prabowo did the same thing when he lost to Joko five years ago.
