Japan's government says North Korea launched the projectiles shortly after midday on Monday. It says it has not confirmed if they fell into the country's exclusive economic zone.

The launches come three days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly inspected an artillery drill.

They are the first projectiles to be fired by the North since last November.
North Korea carried out launches on 13 occasions last year, including short-range ballistic missiles. In October, it fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM, for the first time in about three years.
