Sudanese forces crack down on protesters

Sudanese security forces have cracked down on pro-democracy protesters in the capital Khartoum, leaving at least 13 people dead.

On Monday morning, security forces tried to clear thousands of people engaged in sit-in demonstrations near the military headquarters.

A medical group linked to the demonstrators says at least 13 people, including some who were shot, have been killed, and hundreds of others wounded.

The African nation has been ruled by a transitional military council since April, when a military coup ended President Omar al-Bashir's three decades in power.

The protesters have been negotiating with military leaders on how to transition to democracy while continuing their sit-in.

The two sides agreed to hold elections in three years. But the talks were deadlocked by the military's refusal to hand over authority during the period leading up to the elections.

Pro-democracy activists reacted to the latest crackdown by calling on citizens to take action to topple the military council, including taking part in non-violent protests and blocking roads or bridges.
