Suffocation kills 4 inside septic tank in India's Gujarat

Four laborers were killed due to suffocation after entering a septic tank at a dyeing unit in India's western state of Gujarat, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place at a factory on Palsana-Katodara road in a village in Surat district, about 281 km south of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

"It is said last evening two laborers fell unconscious while cleaning the septic tank, and two others who tried to rescue them by entering the tank too fainted there," a police official said.

After all four were taken out of the tank and rushed to the hospital, doctors declared them dead on arrival, the police said.

Laborers in India usually ignore safety standards during work, according to media reports.
