Suga told reporters on Thursday morning that Abe urged Iran to take steps to ease the tensions in the region.

He said Abe stressed Japan's consistent support for the nuclear deal and expressed hope that Iran would abide by the agreement.

Suga said he is hoping for a further candid exchange in Abe's upcoming meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but there's no telling what will happen.

He stressed that the purpose of Abe's visit is not to mediate between Iran and the United States.
