Surging Ayeyawady water hits ancient Bagan

FLOOD water of the Ayeyawady River has reached one feet to the danger mark of ancient Bagan area in Mandalay Region yesterday morning, and is expected to hit its overflow level in three days, according to the announcement of Meteorology and Hydrology Department.

The residents living near the river bank and low lands have been alerted to the possibility of flood in next three days as it has covered two to three feet at some houses and parking area of Lawkanandar Temple in Bagan-Nyaung U Township.

Floods force to close 178 schools in Mandalay

As the Ayeyawady water rises, a total of 178 schools have to close temporarily in Mandalay Region, and Singu Township is with the highest number, said U Khin Maung Toe, Staff Officer from the Mandalay Region Education Office.

Similarly, flash flooding forced to close schools in Thabeikkyin Township on 15th July, and in Singu and Madaya townships on 17th July.

More schools were also closed in Myingyan, Amarapura, TadaU and Patheingyi townships on 20th and 21st July.

The staff officer said, “More than 170 schools are temporarily closed due to inundation up to 21st July. The closure of these schools has to announce when floods occurred ever year.”

Surging water has resulted in the temporary closures of 12 schools in Thabeikkyin, 52 in Singu, 39 in Madaya, 11 in TadaU, 20 in Patheingyi, 19 in Myingyan, 20 in Amarapura, two in Singaing, two in Nyaung U and one in Aungmyethazan townships, out of 4,236 schools at basic education level of Mandalay Region in 2019-2020 academic year.

“Teachers will teach the children in extra times when the flood declined,” he continued.

Pwintbyu Township close three schools

Three basic education schools in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region, are closed due to the swollen Ayeyawady River on yesterday morning.

The water level reached two and half feet at the schools of Thangai, Myingyansu and Kugyi village in Pyintbyu Township, and the closure is expected up to 25th July, said U Nway Wint Kyaw, deputy Township Education Officer.

However, he said missing school times will be substituted in early August.

Flood victims in Htigyaing Township receive relief aid

Flood victims in three villages of Htigyaing Township of Katha District, Sagaing Region, received relief aid yesterday.

There sidents in Chungtaung, Weigyi and Tongal villages were forced to take shelters after Ayeyawady water inundated these village beginning 9:30 am.

U Ba Win, Township Administrator and U Phyo Nyunt Maung, officer of Township Fire Services Department, together with village administrators and officers, presented K1,422,100 cash assistance from Sagaing Region’s Disaster Management Department to 701 flood victims of 144 households at three relief camps.

The Meteorology and Hydrology Department of Pwintbyu Township has forecast Ayeyawady water has declined to 730 centimeters (23.95 ft). (Translated by Aung Khin)
