Taliban attacks on election kill 28 civilians

A UN special report released on Tuesday says the Taliban's attacks targeting Afghanistan's presidential election last month killed 28 civilians and wounded more than 200 on polling day.

The fourth presidential election since the Taliban's fall from power in 2001 was held on September 28.

The Taliban have vowed to disrupt the election process, and there have been many reports of attacks on polling stations.

Local media say voter turnout could have been the lowest for a presidential election due to the terror attacks.

Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, criticized the Taliban, saying the campaign was intended to undermine the electoral process and deprive Afghan citizens of their right to participate in this important political process, freely and without fear.

Vote counting is still underway. The Afghan election commission says it will announce provisional results around October 19.
