Thousands of protestors detained in Iran

Iranian media say security authorities have detained thousands of protestors in anti-government demonstrations since the middle of the month.

The protests spread across the country after the government abruptly raised the price of regular gasoline by at least 50 percent two weeks ago.

A state-run news agency reported on Wednesday that the government estimates that between 130,000 and 200,000 people took part in the rallies. The agency said the offices of 140 government bodies and more than 50 military facilities were damaged.

Other Iranian media quoted a member of parliament's national security committee as saying that about 7,000 people have been arrested.

The government restricted Internet access immediately after the demonstrations began. But the restrictions have been gradually eased since Thursday in some cities, including the capital Tehran.

The government stresses that the unrest has been contained.

Prices in Iran have surged due to US economic sanctions, making the lives of the people increasingly difficult.
