The crash took place in Brahmanbaria, about 100 kilometers east of the capital Dhaka, in the early hours of Tuesday. One train was heading for Dhaka and another for Chittagong, a seaport in the southeastern region, before they collided.

Images taken at the scene showed train carriages damaged beyond recognition. Some cars had the inside exposed and others lying on their sides.

The injured were rushed to hospitals for treatment.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

Railway crossings and signals are often not working properly in the country, resulting in train accidents. Ensuring railway safety is a pressing issue.
