A trooper and a militant were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight broke out at village Kamrazipora of Pulwama, about 38 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

One assault rifle and ammunition were recovered and search operation is underway, Indian army spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.

Officials said the operation in the area was launched on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

Police said the identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was being ascertained.

Reports said another trooper was also wounded in the stand-off.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.
