Tropical depression could become typhoon

A tropical depression approaching Japan's main islands from the south could develop into a typhoon, bringing heavy rain over much of the country.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says rain clouds have developed over the western island of Shikoku as warm, moist air flowed in toward a front lying across the country.

Konan City of Kochi Prefecture had 63 millimeters of rain between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The front and another low pressure system near the Sea of Japan are expected to move up north in the coming hours, making atmospheric conditions unstable over a wide area.

Western Japan could expect downpours and localized thunderstorms through Thursday evening, and eastern Japan through Friday.

The agency is urging residents to stay on alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and river overflows. Caution is also advised for strong winds, high waves, lightning strikes and tornados.
