Trump: 'Iran made a big mistake' in downing drone

US President Donald Trump said "Iran made a big mistake" in shooting down a US surveillance drone.

Trump made the comment to reporters at the White House on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had shot down a US spy drone in Iranian airspace.

Trump disagreed, saying the drone was over international waters. He added that there could have been human error on Iran's side.

Asked how the US will respond, Trump said "you'll find out."

The US military confirmed that a Global Hawk surveillance drone had been shot down. It called the incident "an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset that had not violated Iranian airspace at any time during its mission."

The drone attack only adds to the increasing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The US said Iran was behind attacks on two tankers near the Strait of Hormuz last week and sent an additional 1,000 troops to the Middle East in response.
