Turkey quarantines returning pilgrims

16 March

The Turkish government has quarantined more than 10,000 people who returned from pilgrimages to the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Turkey imposed the measure on Sunday after one pilgrim tested positive for coronavirus.

The returnees have been placed in isolation in student dormitories and other facilities in the capital city of Ankara.

The government says it will continue to impose two-week quarantines on all people who have returned from pilgrimages.

The Saudi Arabian government stopped accepting pilgrims to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina since March 4 in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

But people who went earlier are returning to Turkey every day.

Turkey has confirmed 18 cases of coronavirus.
