Two dead in Taiwan bridge collapse

2 October

Two people are dead after a bridge spanning a harbor collapsed in northeastern Taiwan.

Rescue workers are searching for crew members who may have been trapped in three fishing boats when the bridge fell.

The 140-meter-long bridge in Yilan County collapsed at around 9:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

An oil tanker truck crossing it fell into the water and the fishing boats were buried under debris.

The two fatalities are believed to be crew members. Twelve people, including the truck driver, were injured.

Six crew members remain missing. The search continued overnight.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known.

Media quoted local authorities as saying that part of the bridge fell before the main beam collapsed.
