Two workers dead, six others injured after road collapse in Shizuoka

An elevated expressway under construction collapsed early Thursday in Shizuoka City, central Japan, killing two construction workers and injuring six.

A passerby informed police of the accident at a construction site in Shimizu Ward's Obane district shortly after 3 a.m. The witness said a steel structure fell with a crashing sound.

Police say the section of the expressway being built over the Seishin bypass that collapsed was about 65 meters long and 3 meters wide. It fell 9 meters.

Rescuers say about 30 workers were at the site when the accident occurred, and the victims range in age from their 30s to 70s.

Police and emergency officials are now investigating the cause of the collapse.
