UK Prime Minister to self-isolate

16 Nov

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he must self-isolate because he has been in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Johnson posted a tweet on Sunday. He said he has no symptoms, but that he is following the rules and will be working from the prime minister's residence.

Some British media outlets described the timing of the prime minister's move as particularly bad for him.

Turmoil has been spreading since two of his close aides resigned last week. They stepped down amid reports of a power struggle at Downing Street.

Talks between Britain and the European Union on a free trade agreement and other issues are expected to enter an important phase this week.

Johnson is also facing another major challenge. The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in his country.

The daily number of coronavirus-related deaths has occasionally approached 600. Strict restrictions have been put in place in London and the rest of England.

Johnson contracted the virus earlier this year. He was treated in a hospital's intensive care unit at one point, after his condition worsened.
