UK secretary resigns to protest PM’s Brexit plan

A member of the British Cabinet has resigned in protest of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's handling of the planned departure from the European Union.

Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd announced her resignation on Twitter on Saturday. In a letter to the prime minister, Rudd expressed her discontent with the government's efforts to achieve a new deal with the EU. Rudd wrote that she no longer believes "leaving with a deal is the Government's main objective."

Rudd added she has also quit the Conservative group in parliament. She criticized Johnson for expelling from the group 21 lawmakers who helped the opposition pass a bill compelling him to seek another delay in Brexit. Rudd described the ousting as an "assault on decency and democracy."

The legislation is expected to be enacted as early as Monday. But the prime minister is adamant on taking the UK out of the EU by the current deadline of October 31, with or without a deal with the bloc.—NHK
