UN chief congratulates Biden-Harris victory

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

The UN spokesperson released a statement on behalf of Guterres on Monday. It said, "the partnership between the United States and the United Nations is an essential pillar of the international cooperation needed to address the dramatic challenges facing the world today."

The global body has been concerned about the US decision under President Donald Trump to leave the World Health Organization and the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The UN chief is apparently expressing his strong hope that Biden, who has shown a positive stance on international cooperation, will lead the global community.

On Harris becoming the first female vice president, the spokesperson said the secretary-general always welcomes a woman breaking a new ceiling.
