UN Security Council to meet on N.Korea

The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss North Korea's missile program.

The US State Department told NHK on Monday that it had asked the US mission to the UN to propose the meeting.

Sources close to the Security Council said it agreed and scheduled a meeting for Wednesday.

State Department officials said that council members will discuss the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula, including recent missile launches by North Korea and the possibility the country will escalate its provocative acts.

North Korea has given the US until the year end to lift sanctions.

On Saturday, Pyongyang announced it conducted a test "of great significance" at its satellite launching ground following a series of missile launches.

The Wednesday meeting will also likely include a discussion on a council resolution adopted in 2017 calling on countries to repatriate North Korean workers by December 22 of this year.

Attention is focused on whether the council can offer a unified response to Pyongyang's escalating provocations.
