The latest report from UNICEF says about 120,000 people aged up to 19 died last year from AIDS-related causes. It was released ahead of World AIDS Day.
The agency says 62 percent of the children who died from AIDS in 2018 were in the zero to 4 age group. It stresses the need for measures to prevent mother-child transmission.
More than half of the patients up to the age of 9 were infected before birth.
The report also says more than 60 percent of the infections occurred in sub-Saharan Africa.
It says there are deep regional disparities in access to treatment.
UNICEF is urging governments to improve HIV testing and the treatment environment for children and adolescents.
