The United States Department of Justice and the Union Attorney General’s Office yesterday jointly conducted a workshop focused prosecution of terrorist financing and terrorist activities.
It was held at the Hilton Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw, and began with opening remarks made by Union Attorney-General U Tun Tun Oo and Mr Jorgan
K Andrews, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
In his opening remarks at the workshop, Union Attorney-General U Tun Tun Oo said that terrorism and transnational crimes became a challenge faced by almost all countries and cooperation to combat the terrorism and transnational terrorism was also needed. Myanmar participates in international and regional conventions with a view to combating terrorism while conducting the implementation of enacting necessary local laws. With the assistance of the United States Department of Justice, Myanmar has established the Transnational Crime Unit comprised of twenty-four legal officers in May, 2018. It was of great beneficial for them to conduct the training course as an act to investigate the transnational crimes, to prosecute and conduct the cases.
Then the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs said that further assistances would be provided in the fight against the transnational crimes and terrorism to be effective. In doing so, cooperation among the relevant organizations was of great importance. Also present at the workshop were the Deputy Attorney’s General from the Union Attorney General’s Office, the permanent secretary, the Directors-General, the US Deputy Chief of Mission Mr George Sibley, officials, representatives from the Union Attorney-General’s office and the Myanmar Police Force.—MNA (Translated by Win Ko Ko Aung)
