Union Information Minister discusses development of Myanmar film industry, preparations for its centenary celebration

Union Minister for Information Dr Pe Myint discussed the development of Myanmar film industry during the meeting held at the Central Printing Factory of the Printing and Publishing Department on Theinbyu road, Yangon, yesterday. The Union Minister chaired the meeting which was also attended by U Kyi Soe Tun, the patron of Myanmar Motion Picture Organization and its Chairman U Nyi Nyi Tun Lwin.

In his opening speech, the Union Minister talked about the centenary of Myanmar film industry in coincidence with other 100th anniversaries in 2020 and the preparations of ministry since the last year for successful holding of the centenary.

Film Director U Kyi Soe Tun, U Nyi Nyi Tun Lwin and the members of MMPO presented their plans for development of Myanmar film industry amid the impacts of COVID-19, resumptions of production and reopening of movie theatres and consideration about celebration of the centenary.

In the afternoon, Union Minister Dr Pe Myint, the chairman of steering committee for organizing the centenary event of Myanmar film industry, held a coordination meeting with members of respective sub-committees.

At the meeting, the Union Minister explained preparations for the event, and some possible restrictions on the celebration amid COVID-19 disease although campaigns were conducted on newspapers and televisions.

He also remarked a timely decision should be made by August on the scale of event in October, while the works for publishing a commemorative magazine and paper-reading session should be started at an appropriate time ahead of centenary.

Acting Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Aye Kywe briefed on the preparatory works for the event, followed by the discussions of officials from the sub-committees.

The onset of Myanmar film industry was marked on the day when the film ‘Metta and Athura’ was screened on 13 October 1920.

The centenary event is being prepared by a steering committee, a work committee and 16 sub-committees with the three aims to convey the message on the history of Myanmar film industry, to promote it, and to serve for the interest of country and people.—MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
