US: More than 1,000 killed in protests in Iran

A US State Department official says more than 1,000 people may have been killed in recent protests in Iran, which followed fuel price hikes by the government last month.

The US Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, told reporters on Thursday that the government had obtained video showing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing machine guns at demonstrators in a city in the country's southwest.

Hook said there are reports that about 100 people were killed in the incident, and that hundreds more were killed in and around the capital Tehran.

He added that the casualties may have reached more than 1,000 since the protests began.

Hook said that now is the time for all nations to stand with the Iranian people, diplomatically isolate the regime, and sanction those who are responsible for the killings.
