Venice has been hit by its highest tide in half a century, with floods leaving many of the city's most famous sites under water.

On Tuesday, a 187-centimeter tide swept through the northern Italian city. This came on the back of several days of heavy rain.

It is the second highest figure ever recorded in the city, following a 194-centimeter tide in 1966.
People could be seen walking through knee-high water in St. Mark's Square, a popular tourist destination located in the lowest part of the city.

The mayor said in a tweet that the tide was a result of global warming, and called on the Italian government to provide support.
