Virus outbreak disrupts Italy travel

11 March

A growing number of transport services to and from Italy have been suspended as the country is on a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

The number of infections in Italy has topped 10,000.

The government imposed the restrictions across the country from Tuesday.

People are being asked to stay at home except for work and emergencies until April 3.

British Airways says it will suspend all Italy flights through April 4. Air France says it will do the same between March 14 and April 3.

Austria says it will halt air and train passenger services to and from Italy.

Slovenia has indicated it will take a similar step. Both nations share borders with Italy.

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the moves, saying cooperation among countries is more effective.

But travel between Italy and other countries is expected to become increasingly difficult, as Spain, which doesn't border with Italy, is also suspending all Italy flights.
