Weather officials warn of strong winds in northern to eastern Japan

Very strong winds and gusts are expected in northern and eastern Japan through Friday. High waves are also forecast.

The Meteorological Agency says a front and a low-pressure system over the East China Sea is bringing rain to Kyushu and Shikoku regions.

The system will probably move northeast over the Sea of Japan while developing rapidly.

Winds of up to 82.8 kilometers per hour are forecast in Hokkaido and the Kanto region. The Tohoku region is likely to have a maximum wind speed of 72 kilometers per hour.

Waves as high as 5 meters are forecast in the same regions.

Some areas in the Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions are likely to have heavy rainfall through Friday, as warm and damp air will flow into the low pressure system and front, making atmospheric conditions unstable.

Weather officials are advising caution against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swelling rivers, lightning strikes and tornados.
