The prices of onion, Kyukok garlic, palm oil and chilli pepper declined at the Bayintnaung Wholesale Market in Yangon for a week ending 31 January 2023. Meanwhile, the price of Chinese potatoes rose slightly on low supply.
Onion
Bayintnaung Wholesale market saw the entry of 450,000 visses of new onions on 30 and 31 January 2023. The prices moved in the range of K1,500 and K2,200 per viss depending on the quality, size and producing areas (Seikphyu, Myingyan and Myittha) last Wednesday.
On 31 January, the price of onions from the Myittha area hit the highest of 1,900 per viss in the Mandalay market, while those from the Pakokku area also fetched K1,300 per viss. With about 100,000 visses of onions daily flowing into Myingyan depot, the highest price of onions was only K1,400 per viss on 30 January.
As supply outstrips demand, the price is likely to drop below K1,000 per viss, the market observers from regions outside Yangon forecast.
Garlic
Although the price of local garlic from Shan State (Aungban area) stayed on the high side, Kyukok garlic price is decreasing.
The wholesale price of the Kyukok garlic variety was approximately K3,450 per viss on 31 January 2023, while the local garlic from Shan State (Aungban) fetched K5,100- 6,300 per viss.
Potato
Chinese potato prices escalated to K2,300 per viss these days, while the prices of Shan potatoes moved in the range between K1,750 and K2,100 per viss.
Chilli pepper
The wholesale prices of chilli peppers were K13,000-14,000 per viss for long chilli pepper and K11,000-12,000 for the Moehtaung variety. The prices of bell peppers from the Sinphyukyun area were K15,000-16,000 per viss.
Palm oil
The wholesale reference price of palm oil in the Yangon Region for three consecutive weeks from 16 January to 5 February has been set at K4,430-4,440. The reference price hovered unchanged. However, the market price rallied compared to the reference price. The delivery order price of palm oil increased to K6,250 per viss on 30 January from K6,000 on 16 January.
Rice
The price of broken rice stood at K41,400-42,000 per bag on 31 January. The new low-grade rice was valued at K46,000-54,000 per bag depending on varieties (Ngasein, Pawkywe and rice grown under intercropping system). The new Pawsan rice prices peaked at K62,000-88,000 per bag depending on the producing areas (Pyapon, Myaungmya and Shwebo).
The old Pawsan rice prices rocketed to K75,000- 107,000 per bag depending on the producing areas.
Pulses
The prices of various pulses stood at over K1,752,500 per tonne of black gram (Fair Average Quality/RC), K1,977,500 per tonne of black gram (Special Quality/RC), K1,900,000 per tonne of pigeon pea (red gram) RC, K4,000 -4,300 per viss of chickpea and K2,800- 2,920 per viss of green gram (Kayan Shwewah variety) in Yangon markets. — TWA/EM
