Xi, Putin hold talks in Moscow

6 June

The leaders of China and Russia have confirmed their cooperation on economic and security issues amid souring relations with the United States.

Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

Putin said at the start of the meeting that the relations between Russia and China have developed to an unprecedented level. He said he is certain that Xi's visit will help to further improve bilateral ties.

Russia is expanding trade with China as Western nations are imposing economic sanctions on Moscow. The trade volume between Russia and China last year was the largest ever, at about 101 billion dollars.

The countries are also strengthening cooperation in military affairs and space development.

The leaders signed two joint statements after their three-hour talks. They pledged to develop a comprehensive partnership and boost coordination on security issues.

Xi will stay in Russia until Friday. The Chinese and Russian leaders are to attend the Group of 20 summit in the Japanese city of Osaka later this month.
