Aiming to promote China-Myanmar relations, Chinese Film Week will be held at the Chinese Culture Centre in Yangon.
The event, which will be jointly organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, China Media Group (CMG), and the Chinese Culture Centre, will showcase films rich in art and culture. Featured films include film A Dream of Red Mansions, the documentary A Bite of China Season 2, the action and comedy film Detective Chinatown 1, and the series Journey to the West. The event will run from 24 to 27 November.
At the opening ceremony, Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn and Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy to Myanmar Mr Zheng Zhihong delivered speeches, and movie trailers were shown. Chinese Culture Centre officials answered questions from invited media.
Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn stated that Myanmar and China have built significant historical milestones through cooperation in various sectors. The two countries fostered a bilateral relationship rooted in music and art, dating back to the Chinese Tang Dynasty and Myanmar Pyu Era. The Myanmar diplomat Pyu music troupe played a crucial role in promoting friendship between the two nations in China, utilizing music and art in 802 AD. This friendship laid the foundation for enhancing the region’s international affairs and business relations.
In 2013, the Ministry of Information and Chinese Yunnan TV collaborated on a TV drama titled ‘The Legends of Music’, which received praise from both Chinese and Myanmar audiences. Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn emphasized that China and Myanmar, being neighbouring countries, have undergone cooperation not only in the movie sector but also in business and public relations. He mentioned that, similar to Chinese film festivals held in Myanmar annually, Myanmar delegates participated in the Lanmei International Film Week in Yunnan Province, China, showcasing Myanmar movies.
Myanmar movies and short films were featured in the Screening of Outstanding ASEAN-China Audio-Visual Programme, the 5th Guangxi Online Animation Competition, the 2022 China-ASEAN Film Culture Week, and the 5th Lancang-Mekong International Film Week organized by China in 2022 and 2023, he said. He added that “2023 Chinese Film Week” will help Myanmar people learn about China and strengthen the friendship between the two countries. He expressed his hope that the two nations will continue celebrating such festivals in the coming years, contributing to a stronger and enduring China-Myanmar friendship.
The festival was also attended by Yangon Chinese Culture Centre in-charge Mr Xiang Jianbo, Myanmar Motion Picture Organization Chair U Kyi Soe Tun, Myanmar Press Council Chair U Ohn Maung (Myinmu Maung Naing Moe), Yangon University of Foreign Languages Rector Dr Kyi Shwin, officials from the Chinese Culture Centre, and invitees. — ASH/ZS
