THE opening ceremony of the Yangon Region Sports Festival was held yesterday afternoon at the National Indoor Stadium 1 in Thingangyun Township.
Chief Minister of Yangon Region U Soe Thein delivered the opening speech, followed by warm greetings to the participating teams by the chief minister and other regional ministers.
The event featured demonstrations of traditional Myanmar martial arts, Taekwondo, fitness dancing, and acrobatics. Prizes were awarded to outstanding athletes. The sports festival, a precursor to the 2024 National Sports Festival, will run from 14 to 24 September, featuring 24 sports, including football, Sepak Takraw, basketball, badminton, traditional cane ball, golf, cricket, table tennis, volleyball, swimming, athletics, weightlifting, billiards and snooker, boxing, judo, karate, high jump, Taekwondo, Myanma MMA, vovinam, wrestling, wushu, and parasports.
Athletes from 14 districts are participating, with a total of 2,417 players and 599 officials, making 3,016 participants. — Arkar Lin/KZL
