The 36th and 37th liver transplant surgeries were performed at the Speciality Hospital (500-bed) in Yangon on 7 and 8 November, according to the Ministry of Health.
The 36th liver transplant surgery was carried out on a 49-year-old male patient from Mogok Township, Mandalay Region, with liver disease and a 43-year-old female cousin who was the liver donor.
The liver extraction from the donor began at 7:15 am on 7 November, and the transplant surgery for the recipient started at 11:45 am. The surgery was completed at 5:45 pm, with a total duration of ten and a half hours.
The 37th liver transplant surgery was performed on a 60-year-old woman from Haka Township, Chin State, who had liver disease, and a 25-year-old woman who was the liver donor. The surgery was completed at 4:25 pm, with a total duration of seven and a half hours.
All the patients and liver donors who underwent the 36th and 37th liver transplants are in good health following the procedures.
A total of 35 liver transplant surgeries have been performed at various hospitals on donor-recipient pairs between 2004 and 2023. — MNA/TKO
