Amnesty: Over 100 dead in Iran demonstrations

Amnesty International says more than 100 people have died in Iran in clashes between security forces and demonstrators protesting a hike in gasoline prices.

The government increased the prices on Friday by 50 percent for anyone purchasing up to 60 liters a month.

Each additional liter costs three times more than it did the previous day.

Amnesty International said on Tuesday that, based on reports from local sources, at least 106 people have died in 21 cities.

Also on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said there are increasing reports suggesting the numbers killed are certainly in the dozens.

The spokesperson called on the Iranian government to refrain from the use of excessive force against the demonstrators, apparently a reference to the firing of live ammunition.

The full picture of the situation remains unclear because the Iranian government has disclosed no details on the demonstrations and has significantly restricted Internet access in the country.
