THE World Health Organization (WHO) was established on 7 April 1948, and has now reached its 78th anniversary. 7 April, the day the WHO was founded, has been designated as World Health Day since 1950, and every year on this date, member countries hold commemorative events and activities to observe World Health Day.
In recent times, the right of millions of people around the world to live healthy lives is increasingly threatened. The outbreak of diseases and the occurrence of disasters have become major causes of death and disability. Armed conflicts are leading to fatalities, injuries, malnutrition, and severe psychological trauma, destroying countless human lives in a deliberate and widespread manner. Moreover, the burning of fossil fuels causes climate disruption and simultaneously deprives people of access to clean air for breathing.
In addressing the health challenges faced worldwide, access to quality healthcare, education, and reliable information is a fundamental right that everyone should enjoy. Additionally, everyone should have access to clean drinking water, pure air, adequate and nutritious food, adequate housing, safe and decent working conditions, a healthy environment, and a life free from discrimination.
In Myanmar, efforts to improve healthcare for citizens are being implemented through the collaboration of relevant ministries, the Ministry of Defence’s military medical teams, charitable and social welfare organizations, and active participation from the general public. As people around the world face health challenges, Myanmar too confronts threats such as diseases, conflicts, and air pollution. Health is a fundamental right for everyone, and ensuring that all individuals can enjoy this right requires active involvement and cooperation from the community.
Success in controlling infectious diseases, raising awareness about non-communicable diseases, halting domestic armed conflicts, and reducing air pollution caused by factors such as the use of fossil fuels can only be achieved quickly and effectively through the active participation and collective effort of the public.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the theme for World Health Day on 7 April 2026, as “Together for health. Stand with science”. This campaign focuses on promoting evidence-based policies and scientific collaboration to protect the health of people, animals, and the planet, highlighting the need for trusted, science-led health solutions. For everyone to enjoy good health by implementing the theme of World Health Day 2026, it is necessary to clarify and eliminate the fundamental factors that threaten life and resilience. As such, every citizen must actively and responsibly participate in fulfilling their individual duties.
