THE signing ceremony of the Agreement of Cooperation on Projects of the Lancang-Me­kong Cooperation Special Fund (2026) was held on 28 May 2026 at the M-Gallery Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw.

 

The Agreement was signed by the Deputy Min­ister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Ambassa­dor of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar in the presence of U Tin Maung Swe, Union Minister for For­eign Affairs. Also present at the ceremony were the Union Ministers and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Live­stock and Irrigation, Minis­try of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Ministry of Industry and MSME Development and Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture.

 

At the ceremony, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Tin Maung Swe delivered the opening remarks, high­lighting the significance of the signing ceremony as 2026 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Mekong-Lancang Co­operation. He appreciated China for its consistent sup­port to the Mekong countries through the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund (LMCSF). He recognized that the LMCSF has been instrumental in implement­ing people-centred develop­ment projects and has sig­nificantly contributed to the socioeconomic development of the people in the region. Since 2017, Myanmar has re­ceived 140 projects, which are valued at US$40.46 million. For 2026, Myanmar will im­plement eight projects, and these projects will contribute to the country’s efforts in pro­moting agriculture, energy, environmental conservation, water resource management, MSME development and cul­tural cooperation.

 

The Union minister reaf­firmed Myanmar’s commit­ment to working closely with China and other member countries to promote peace, prosperity, sustainability and inclusive development in the region.

 

Ms Ma Jia, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, also delivered the remarks.

 

The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation is a sub-region­al cooperation mechanism which was officially launched in 2016 with the aim of promot­ing sustainable and inclusive regional development among six member countries, namely Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet­nam. — MNA
