PYITHU Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi met with members of the Education Promotion Committee yesterday afternoon at the Hluttaw Committee Building (I-13) to discuss the strategic development of the nation’s education sector, emphasizing the need to review key education laws and prioritize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Addressing the committee, Speaker U Khin Yi commended its members for thoroughly preparing their objectives, plans and strategic goals. He said that, given the broad scope of parliamentary work, committees must adopt a visionary approach to effectively support the Hluttaw. Describing committees as the pillars of the Hluttaw, he noted that the success of the legislature’s overall work depends largely on their performance.
He also said that education is fundamental to national development, urging the committee to adopt a broad and analytical approach in carrying out its responsibilities and to focus on strengthening the foundation of the basic education system.
Highlighting legislative priorities, the Speaker said there are currently nine laws under the committee’s purview. He instructed the committee to review them and prioritize amendments according to urgency. In particular, he called for a priority review of the 2014 National Education Law, stressing that it should be carefully amended to reflect the country’s current needs.
The Speaker also said the State is prioritizing access to education for all school-aged children. To support children who have dropped out of school or remain outside the formal education system, the Hluttaw has raised questions and submitted motions calling for comprehensive school surveys. He also emphasized the importance of narrowing the gap between education and the labour market by strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which he described as essential to national development.
Speaker U Khin Yi further suggested that incorporating ethnic languages into the basic education curriculum could promote friendship and understanding among the country’s ethnic groups and contribute to the national peace process. He welcomed the committee’s efforts to draft comprehensive legislation on teachers’ welfare and measures to prevent violence in schools.
In conclusion, the Speaker urged the committee to work closely with the State to advance reforms in the education sector and address current challenges through practical and effective approaches. After the meeting, he greeted the committee chairman, secretary and members individually. — MNA/TH
