MYANMAR exported 754.8 tonnes of bamboo products to foreign countries as of 12 June in the current 2026-2027 financial year, generating US$0.154 million, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.
The ministry has been drafting district-level forest management plans to conserve bamboo resources and adhere to sustainable harvesting. Myanmar is home to 21 bamboo genera and approximately 102 bamboo species. According to bamboo resource data, the annual allowable harvest for bamboo is limited to 318.325 million bamboo culms.
The average annual production was 120.543 million bamboo culms during 10 years from 2015- 2016 FY to 2025-2026 FY. Cutting techniques are systematically supervised to ensure sustainable, long-term production. The Ministry of Commerce has been facilitating exports of bamboo products. Bamboo exports were registered at over 2,650 tonnes of bamboo (worth $0.677 million) in the 2025-2026 FY,” said an official from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.
Furthermore, the ministry has allowed private companies to establish industrial raw material bamboo plantations within forest reserve areas since the 2006-2007 FY. A total of 4,815.5 acres of private industrial raw material bamboo plantations have been permitted as of June 2026.
Bamboo and bamboo products have been exported to India, Pakistan, Singapore, Italy, China and other foreign markets. A total of over 95.58 million bamboo products, including bamboo splits, poles, mats, incense sticks, and bamboo charcoal, were exported from 2021-2022 FY to May 2026-2027 FY, generating revenue of over $2.456 million. — ASH/KK
