Sao San Tun Hospital was built, through economic and expertise cooperation of the Soviet Union, by Commander Brig-Gen Maung Lwin (BSc Engineering) of Rehabilitation Brigade No 1 in 1957. It aimed to ensure Russia-Myanmar friendly ties. Construction of all buildings cost K4 million. In June 1961, the hospital was commissioned into service. The first-ever medical superintendent of the hospital was Dr Sao Naw Kham, and it was the only general hospital in Shan State. At the time of its establishment, the hospital accommodated 200 beds. On 16 December 2015, the hospital was upgraded to a 500-bed general hospital. — MNA/TTA
