Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, accompa­nied by Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung, attended a ceremony to launch the “De­veloping Libraries and Raising Reading Habits” campaign at No 1 BEHS in PyinOoLwin yes­terday.

 

Speaking at the event, the Union minister, who is also Chairman of the Myanmar Li­braries Development Cooper­ation Committee, said the de­velopment of nations depends significantly on their human resource capacities. Thus, all should work together to mentor the students and youths for the development of the country.

 

He then highlighted the ef­forts of the Prime Minister to create learning opportunities and improve reading habits.

 

Afterwards, he handed over K255 million to construct 17 new libraries and 12,000 books and publications for 600 libraries to the region’s chief minister, seven DTH dishes and seven DVB T2- set top boxes for basic high and middle schools to the headmas­ters and headmistresses.

 

The region chief minister expressed gratitude, and author U Aung Thin (Ko Shwe Aung Thin) presented books and pub­lications to district education of­ficer Daw Shwe Sin Ei.

 

After the entertainment programmes of famous singers, comedians and students, the Un­ion minister gave cash awards to performers and observed the displayed books, journals, departmental booths, photo ex­hibition, story-telling competi­tion, essay competition, painting, quizzes, impromptu talks and fun game competitions.

 

A total of 4,000 students of basic education schools and pri­vate high schools in PyinOoL­win participated in the event. — MNA/KTZH
