TRUCKS loaded with goods stranded in Hpa-an during the temporary closure of Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II are given the go-ahead to continue their journeys after completing customs procedures, said U Saw Khin Maung Myint, Kayin State Government’s Minister for Economic Affairs.

Over 200 trucks were stuck in Hpa-an town during the temporary closure of Friendship Bridge II on 18 August to undergo customs inspections. At present, only 20 trucks are paused in Hpa-an town.

“After passing customs inspections, only 20 trucks are left for now. Goods are released into the country after the Customs clearance process is completed. The smuggled goods are seized. Some trucks carried food commodities, personal goods, construction materials and electronic devices,” he continued.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to shift goods stranded on the Thai side to sea trade through negotiations with the relevant authorities. The relevant department will issue import permits for these goods to be legally imported into the country. — ASH/KK
