Pakokku, 15 July
A total of nine basic education schools in Pakokku Township, Magway Region, have been temporarily closed since 3 July as a precautionary measure due to rising water levels in the Irrawaddy River, according to the Township Education Officer’s Office.
From 3 to 14 July, the following schools were affected: Pakokku Kyun Post-Primary School, Kya Kyun Primary School, Thein Kone/Maro Kone Primary School, Bawlung Khun Middle School, and Shadaw Primary School.
As of 15 July, four additional schools have also been closed due to continued flooding: Myazalot B.E.H.S., Shapinkai B.E.H.S., Htaukshapin B.E.H.S., and Letpankyun B.E.M.S.
In total, 889 students and 41 teachers are affected by the closures. Education officials stated that schools will reopen once water levels recede and conditions are safe.—Bamitha (Pakokku)
