Pwintbyu, 16 July

Four schools in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region, were temporarily closed this morning as water levels of the Irrawaddy River continued to rise, according to the Township Education Officer’s Office.

The affected schools are Thangaing Basic Education Primary School, Nyaung Kone Basic Education Primary School, Si Mone Sub-Basic Education High School, and Zee Kyun Basic Education High School. The closures aim to ensure the safety of students and teachers amid the threat of flooding. Classes will resume once water levels subside.

To minimize disruption to learning, arrangements have been made for students to attend makeup classes on alternate days once the schools reopen.

Each year, during the Irrawaddy River’s seasonal rise, schools in several riverside villages in Pwintbyu Township face similar challenges, with floodwaters often affecting school grounds. Temporary closures are implemented as a precautionary measure to safeguard school communities.— Hlaing Win Lay (Pwintbyu Myay)
