Thandaunggyi Township in Kayin State, a mountainous region, experienced landslides yesterday evening following continuous heavy rainfall that began on 26 July.

 

The landslides caused significant property damage in several areas. A two-story house belonging to Saw Yua Ekwa in Ward 1, measuring 20 feet by 13 feet, was completely destroyed, resulting in a loss of Ks 300,000. Another house owned by U Saw He Mya, measuring 28 feet by 15 feet, was also destroyed, with an estimated loss of Ks 100,000. Additionally, a house belonging to U Saw Johnny, sized 20 by 18 feet and roofed with corrugated iron, suffered damage totaling Ks 50,000.

 

In Ward 3, the brick-and-tile house of Naw Yua Ae, measuring 30 by 15 feet and roofed with corrugated iron, sustained Ks 500,000 in damages. Meanwhile, the wall of U Saw Kalutaw’s house, about 30 feet in length, collapsed, causing a loss of Ks 150,000.

 

Apart from residential damage, landslides also occurred near Ward 1 Road and in several sections of the Thandaunggyi–Taungoo Road, disrupting transportation.

 

Fortunately, no injuries or loss of life were reported. Families from the damaged houses have been temporarily relocated to stay with relatives. Cleanup operations are underway with assistance from the Township Fire Department, local administrative officials, and community members.— Naw Naw Mu
