First celebrated in 2012 to raise awareness on elephant conservation and prevent extinction, World Elephant Day is now supported by nearly 70 wildlife organizations worldwide.

ALL the elephant camps in My­anmar are presenting elephant buffets to celebrate World El­ephant Day and preserve Asian ele­phants.

On the occasion which falls on 12 August, welcoming events took place at the Wingabaw camp in Bago Region and the Palin Kanthaya camp on the bank of the Ayeyawady in NyaungU, Mandalay Region.

“We feed a buffet to elephants in our camp. Students from the Palin Village Middle School visited, and we explained to them about elephants, the differences between African elephants and Asian elephants, and elephant con­servation in Myanmar,” said U Chit Ko Ko, in charge of the Palin Kanthaya camp.

World Elephant Day was first cele­brated in 2012 to raise awareness about the importance of elephant conserva­tion and to prevent extinction. To date, nearly 70 wildlife organizations support the World Elephant Day celebration. — Htun Htun/GNLM
