Paungde, 25 September
A vaccination campaign targeting cervical cancer and diphtheria (DT) was conducted yesterday at Basic Education Schools, including two monastic schools, across Paungde Township in the Bago Region.
During the event, Dr. Than Than Chit from the Township Public Health Department explained that the HPV vaccine is being administered to eligible schoolgirls aged 9 and 10 as part of the national routine immunization program. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of nearly all cervical cancer cases, and the vaccine plays a critical role in preventing cervical and other HPV-related cancers of the reproductive system.
As part of the campaign, a total of 84 schoolgirls aged 9 and 10 from 11 Basic Education Schools received the HPV vaccine. In addition, 135 students were vaccinated against diphtheria.
Similar school-based vaccination efforts are currently being carried out in both urban and rural areas, according to the Paungde Township Public Health Department.— Shwetha (IPRD)
