FOLLOWING the negative consequences of the powerful earthquake, the Trade Department under the Ministry of Commerce has been granting import licences for essential goods required, including pharmaceuticals, steel bars, zinc sheets, cement, construction materials, electrical devices and water supplies, industrial machinery and spare parts, promptly on the same day based on the type of foreign currencies used.
A massive earthquake hit Myanmar on 28 March 2025, causing many fatalities and damage to houses and infrastructure. The State is exerting concerted efforts to carry out rescue activities and reconstruction for those affected.
The Ministry of Commerce also issued import licences for medicines and medical equipment worth US$7.403 million in recent days. It will proceed to process pharmaceutical imports to ensure adequate domestic supply and meet the needs.
Furthermore, licences worth $19.039 million were also urgently granted to import steel bars, zinc sheets, iron and steel, cement, construction materials, electrical and water equipment, industrial machinery and spare parts for reconstruction efforts. The department is prioritizing the essential goods in issuing licences within 24 hours during the post-earthquake recovery period.
The ministries concerned are joining hands with organizations and donors for rescue and resettlement activities. The ministry has been offering licences through a one-stop service team to ensure timely imports of essential medicine and construction materials. — KK
