THE Department of Agriculture in Magway Region has announced plans to designate two special zones aimed at increasing the production of oil crops within the region.
According to the department, these two special zones will be established across five districts. Zone 1 will cover Magway, Chauk, and Aunglan Districts, while Zone 2 will include Minbu and Thayet Districts.
Within these designated special zones, over 2.4 million acres of land have been earmarked for oil crop cultivation. The primary crops to be grown are groundnut, sesame, and sunflower. During the early monsoon season, high-yield sesame varieties such as Sinyadana 3 and Sinyadana 4 will be cultivated on over 1.2 million acres this year.
To achieve a target yield of 20 baskets per acre, the Department of Agriculture is working to ensure the use of quality seeds, the development of fertile soil layers, and the provision of technical support.
Besides oil crops, the region also cultivates paddy, various types of pulses, industrial crops such as cotton, and other crops. — ASH/KNN
