YANGON Galacticos, the Myanmar team that claimed the championship title at the 2025 Esports World Cup, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 25 July to 3 August, returned to Yangon yesterday afternoon to a hero’s welcome.
The triumphant athletes, who brought pride and honour to the nation, were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, regional ministers, officials from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the President of the Myanmar Esports Federation, students, and large crowds of enthusiastic fans.
Representing Myanmar for the first time at the world-class Esports World Cup, Yangon Galacticos competed in a tournament featuring more than 25 esports categories. In the Grand Final, held on 3 August, the team secured victory over strong opponents from China and Mongolia, winning each match with top scores and claiming the world champion title, along with a cash prize of US$550,000.
The 2025 Esports World Cup in Riyadh was a prestigious international event featuring over 1,000 elite teams and 5,000 professional players from more than 100 countries. Myanmar’s Yangon Galacticos competed against 24 top-tier teams from 16 nations, including the host country Saudi Arabia, as well as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, India, China, South Korea, Japan, Türkiye, Egypt, and Brazil, ultimately claiming the world title with distinction.
Additionally, Mythic SEAL, another team from Myanmar, reached the quarter-finals of the MLBB MSC Esports World Cup 2025, earning a US$100,000 prize. Similarly, Terror Queen, a female team representing Myanmar, secured third place in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang – Women’s Invitational (MWI) category and received US$50,000 in prize money.
This marks the first time that a Myanmar team has won a world championship title in a global esports tournament, with Yangon Galacticos achieving this remarkable milestone against international professional teams. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/KZL
